3rd Alarm Manchester, NH. 5 Barr Street 11/25/2012
On Sunday Morning at 2:07am, Manchester NH Fire Dept. responded to 5 Barr Street for a reported building fire. Fire Alarm advised companies en route that the Manchester Police Dept was on scene confirming a roof fire and officers were removing residents from the building.
First due Engine-6 reported smoke showing on arrival. Upon arrival of the District Chief, he reported heavy smoke from a large 3.5 story wood-frame occupied apartment building and shortly after that struck the 2nd Alarm.
Firefighters stretched several hand lines to the upper floors of the building and found fire in the walls and attic areas. The fire broke thru the roof area and when the heavy fire started to vent from the "D" side attic area, the OIC had the air horns sound and pulled all firefighters from the building and went to exterior operations. The OIC ordered the 3rd Alarm transmitted as this happened.
Trucks 1, 3, 5, 7 went to work with the ladder pipes and several firefighters on lines from the exterior. After a few minutes of heavy fire in the attic, the middle portion of the roof collapsed which also caused a chimney to collapse and fall into the street on the "A" side. As this happened, a large amount of embers started to go thru out the neighborhood and police officers and firefighters evacuated 2 exposures on Granite Street side.
It took firefighters alittle more than an hour and a half to bring the fire under control. After the heavy fire was knocked down, firefighters went back to an interior attack to open up and overhaul.
The fire left some 30 people homeless and were being assisted by the American Red Cross.
